Projects – Boat

Big Plans! Big!

You may be wondering why I haven’t written in a while. I know that springtime for us can be filled with lots of things to do, house chores when the weather improves from winter’s stranglehold, various boat projects du jour, and finally getting out on the water for some relaxation. Have I been overcome by a bout of writer’s block? Don’t I have anything to say? I promise you that nothing of the sort has happened! In fact, I have written a lot in the last couple of months, but I haven’t felt like any of it was worthy of…

Ready for Spring!

Wake up!  Wake up I keep telling myself!  It’s springtime and I need to break out of my winter hibernation-blues.  Time to go to the boat!  Bits and pieces of our next boat projects are arriving on our door step, we’re making plans and lists of things to do, and the snow is finally melting.  Even daylight savings time starts this weekend, so everything is telling me that it’s time to go to the boat and get started on our spring projects!  Time’s a-wasting!  We’re not going to let what happened last year happen again, we deserve more than 2…

Spring Boat Projects, Part 2

It’s summertime now here in northern Wisconsin! We have finally wrapped up all of our projects with getting our new radar and instruments installed, and getting the mast up and all of the wiring connected.  The good news is everything works!  All lights, horn, radar, instruments and sensors are doing their thing and work perfectly. We got Wandering Toes (and Baby Toe) out on the water for her first sail over the 4th of July weekend and had wonderful weather. We met friends out in the Apostle Islands and were able to anchor together and visit and we had a…

Spring Boat Projects, Part 1

Hi all! We wanted to check in with everyone and let you know that we’ve uploaded our latest new video to YouTube!  We’ve been working like crazy on our boat projects every spare moment for months.  It’s been fun, tiring, exciting, terrifying, slow and furious all at the same time.  And through it all, we have done our best to capture at least some of our adventures for you to see.  There ended up being way too much for one video, so I titled this one “Part 1” and will try to tell the rest of the story in the…

The mad, mad month of May

We have a sad announcement. Marge’s Mom, Angie Effinger passed away on May 2nd early in the morning. The entire family was gathered for services and it has been a sad time for us. Angie lived a very long and full life and passed away in her sleep after reaching her goal of living to 100. That’s a feat of unimaginable strength and she will forever be in our hearts. And so our plans have been scattered along with our emotions as we pick up the pieces. We are a bit off schedule, but not off track. As Marge always…

Composting Toilet Review

Okay, so I know that this blog post won’t be for everybody.  I get a lot of questions about the new Composting Toilet that we installed on Wandering Toes in 2015.  How it works, if we like it, etc.  It is a bit ironic that something so natural and so much a part of our daily lives could be such a mystery.  We all learn the process so early in life and then are promptly trained not to talk about it, not to think about it and not to worry, and that the act of even speaking about it is…

2016 – Boat Projects List

We’re went to the marina on Sunday, January 24th to do our first boat project of 2016, and I thought I’d try to look into our crystal ball and see what we hope to accomplish with the boat this year. We are on quite a roll and hope to keep moving forward with all of our projects. When we left the boat in the fall, we removed the salon overhead hatch and brought it home with us leaving just a piece of plywood in its place. A few weeks ago I cut a 4 inch hole in it and mounted…

2016 – New Year looking forward

I’m going to try to keep this blog post short and sweet.  The reason I haven’t written is that I’ve been busy.  That sounds like an excuse to even me, so here’s a short list of what we’ve been up to since mid-December. I made an engine stand for the new dinghy motor and we ran it for a while one freezing day with Marine fuel stabilizer, then proceeded to change the lower unit gear oil before hanging it up for the season. I spent an entire day working on getting our Sail Wandering Toes YouTube Channel tweaked and looking…

2015 Year End Projects

Well, I guess the season is over.  Way over, I suppose, but we never really stop thinking and planning and putzing with boat projects.  It was fantastic to attend Bill and Ella’s holiday marina gathering last weekend.  I didn’t do an official count, but it seemed like there were 30 people from the marina at least.  The food was great, it was really nice to see everyone and catch up, and Oh My Gosh the sailing conversations were EPIC!  I loved it!  Everyone got to spend lots of quality time visiting and talking and just being part of our “Sailing…

Baby Toe!

We bought a dinghy! The anticipation has been killing us. Last summer we were walking around our marina and saw a dinghy that appeared to be extremely nicely built. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It had a rigid plastic floor, a squared off bow for greater interior space, nice large tubes with built in rub rails, great seats. I don’t know. You just know it when you see it right? I inquired around only to find out it was our marina owners’ dinghy. I asked about it and looked at them online and really…
