Downsizing

It started years ago for me.  I found myself looking at the stereo equipment in my living room.  This monstrosity of a metal box with lights and buttons and dials and jacks, and the wires coming out of the back of it reminded you of some alien mothership with it’s tentacles and connections to other massive equipment and speakers.  There was a VCR and DVD player, a game console and a 400 disc CD player.  A 400 disc CD player that was half the size of a small refrigerator practically!  And the speakers were four feet tall.  My TV was…

Gypsy Spirit

It’s the first weekend of Fall and Wandering Toes is beginning to accept that our time playing in the water is almost over for this year.  We have had a fun summer as best as we could given everything that has happened outside of our boating life. We took trips to the Apostle Islands with friends, over to Houghton, Michigan for a week, we sailed to Duluth with my dad aboard to see the Duluth Tall Ships Festival in August, and we tore our boat engine apart and almost completely rebuilt it in order to replace a leaking timing cover…

One Year Of Sail Wandering Toes

Wow!  Marge and I are sitting in a coffee shop in Bayfield, Wisconsin, sipping on our Mocha’s and just being a part of the world.  We spent last night tied up to the City Dock here in Bayfield after a sleepless night in a rolling anchorage the night before.  It’s a beautiful Friday morning on the eve of the Labor Day weekend and the touristy town on the shore of Lake Superior in the heart of the Apostle Islands National Lake-shore is buzzing.  We’ve been out sailing for the last week in our home grounds of the Apostle Islands and…

Spring Boat Projects, Part 2

It’s summertime now here in northern Wisconsin! We have finally wrapped up all of our projects with getting our new radar and instruments installed, and getting the mast up and all of the wiring connected.  The good news is everything works!  All lights, horn, radar, instruments and sensors are doing their thing and work perfectly. We got Wandering Toes (and Baby Toe) out on the water for her first sail over the 4th of July weekend and had wonderful weather. We met friends out in the Apostle Islands and were able to anchor together and visit and we had a…

Composting Toilet Review

Okay, so I know that this blog post won’t be for everybody.  I get a lot of questions about the new Composting Toilet that we installed on Wandering Toes in 2015.  How it works, if we like it, etc.  It is a bit ironic that something so natural and so much a part of our daily lives could be such a mystery.  We all learn the process so early in life and then are promptly trained not to talk about it, not to think about it and not to worry, and that the act of even speaking about it is…

Baby Toe!

We bought a dinghy! The anticipation has been killing us. Last summer we were walking around our marina and saw a dinghy that appeared to be extremely nicely built. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It had a rigid plastic floor, a squared off bow for greater interior space, nice large tubes with built in rub rails, great seats. I don’t know. You just know it when you see it right? I inquired around only to find out it was our marina owners’ dinghy. I asked about it and looked at them online and really…
